Domestic Violence Statistics

Did you know…

1. An estimated three to four million American women are abused each year by their husbands
    or partners.

2. Violence occurs at least once in two-thirds of all marriages.

3. Sexual assault frequently accompanies physical abuse. Ten to 14 percent of all married women
    and at least 40 percent of abused wives have been raped by their husbands.

4. A woman is more likely to be assaulted, injured, raped or killed by a male partner than any other     assailant.

5. Ninety (90) percent of female homicide victims are murdered by men. Eighty (80) percent of those     women are murdered at home.

6. Many women are battered physically for the first time during pregnancy, or on their honeymoon
    night.

7. Fifty (50) percent of all homeless women and children in the United States are fleeing domestic     violence.

8. Police report that between 40 to 60 percent of the calls they receive-especially on the night
    shift-are domestic disputes.

9. Sixty-three (63) percent of children in jail for murder are there for killing an abusive parent

10.Seventy five (75) percent of women killed each year in domestic violence die after they leave
     their abuser.
